Orthotics inserts correct physical deficiencies

At some point, most people who are routinely active find themselves dealing with aches and pains, or injuries that result from their chosen activity.
Kyle Roberts is a certified pedorthist, a medical professional who specializes in making custom orthotics for active individuals. A pedorthist also is knowledgeable in use of footwear, including determining what the right shoes are for individual needs and making modifications as needed. Orthotics are inserts placed inside of the shoes to help correct biomechanical deficiencies and aid in shock absorption.
"Many people have never heard of a pedorthist," states Roberts. "A podiatrist looks exclusively at the foot and attempts to control the way it moves in order to help relieve the problem, whereas a pedorthist looks at the foot as part of the whole body system. Many chronic problems, such as shin splints, knee pain and hip pain are caused by feet that pronate, or roll inward to an excessive degree. A podiatrist is mainly a foot surgeon, and although many support orthotics as part of his practice, this is usually only a small part, not a specialty."

Orthotics help runners put their best foot forward

At the highest levels of competition, athletes interact with coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, physical therapists, massage therapists, sports psychologists and nutritionists.
Despite all the expert interaction, the elite athletes often make the same mistake as weekend warriors.
They ignore their feet.
In nearly every sport, the foot provides the foundation for activity. Problems with the foot, heel or ankle can lead to bigger problems with knees, hips, backs and more.
"Most people don't think about their feet until they start to have major problems," said Kyle Roberts, a certified pedorthist and owner of Footworks Orthotics, Inc.

Tame Those Tender Tootsies
FEATURED ON: M Magazine by Mary Lou Santovec
PUBLISHED: Jan 1, 2008
News flash: Feet aren't supposed to hurt. Just try telling that to the millions of Americans whose tootsies, ankles and soles are singing, even wailing, the blues. Granted, some of the pain is hte owner's fault -- sky-high heels, extra weight, ill-fitting shoes, miles at the track. And much of that can be eliminated with sensible heel heights, a few less pounds, shoes with wider toe boxes or, for serious runners, a reduction in training. But if your feet still hurt after those solutions, it's time to get professioanl help.
"People don't think about their feet unless they're killing them." acknowledges Kyle Roberts, owner of Footworks Orthotics and a certified pedorthist.
